Source File field order change - does it matter?

Hi folks,

Hopefully this is an easy question.

We have a series of IOM templates based on data files sourced from our student system. Those in charge of the student system are migrating to another tool to use for extracting data and providing it to downstream users, in this case, us in Alumni.

It has been asked if the field order matters, as whilst they can replicate the extraction, the order of the fields will be significantly different to the source files that we built our templates on. We have been advised that the field headers will remain consistent, just not the field ordering.

If it matters, we have several virtual fields that are seeded from other fields in the file.

Does it matter if the import files suddenly have a very different field order to what the source files were when we built the template?

Hi Rob,

The order of the columns does matter in IOM, so even if the field headers are the same the import won't function properly. That being said you can make the profile update to adjust to the new column order by selecting general settings->Change Data Source->Select Yes->Select "Attempt to update existing field mapping" and "Match existing fields by name". Then select your new data file. As long as all of your headers are the same it should update the profile mapping accordingly. This can sometimes cause some hiccups with virtual fields so be sure and double check that the mapping there is still correct.

Very many thanks for the reply. This is exactly the information I needed.
