This is a two pass importing process.
You must have the gift membership recipient and the donor giving the gift together on one line/row of the data file. The donor will always need to be in the same column and the recipient will always need to be in the same, different column.
For example, the donor's name will be in columns A and B and the recipient's name will be in columns C and D. If someone is not giving a gift of membership, columns C and D will be blank.

You must import the same data file twice.
On the first pass of the data file you will import the recipient's membership (not the donor information). Make the proper check box selection under "Files" within the left hand profile navigation pane. This check box selection will output the membership import ID.
The second pass of the data file will import the donor's information as well as their own membership, and the gift information. This step will link the gifts. For the donors who are giving a gift of membership, the gift will link via the membership import ID in the output file derived from pass 1 of the data file.
